Long-Dormant PlayStation Series Finally Making a Comeback, Says Report

PlayStation appears to be reviving Killzone. The brand is currently in hot water over its deeply unpopular decision to end PlayStation disc production in a little over a year's time, and has struggled throughout the PS5 generation to keep first-party exclusives releasing at a rate comparable to earlier eras, an issue exacerbated by a dogged strategy to produce an internal live-service hit.

Killzone developer Guerrilla Games is one of many PlayStation Studios members affected. Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op spin-off of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, has waylaid the studio yet again after poor playtest feedback prompted a change in direction, removing all live-service elements. But after Hunters Gathering coalesces, a team at Guerrilla Games will reportedly be part of a Killzone comeback.

New Killzone Project In Development at Guerrilla Games & External Partner Studio

Guerrilla Games will shift attention to two projects after Hunters Gathering: a third mainline Horizon game starring Aloy, and a Killzone remake or remaster project. For the latter, the developer is partnering with a third-party studio, likely People Can Fly, according to a report by MP1st. This appears to be People Can Fly's project codenamed Delta, stemming from a co-development agreement signed with PlayStation in March 2025.

There's no indication of which Killzone title is being updated, as the project is in the very early stages of production. It's possible that a new game could come from Project Delta, "as the idea of a full reboot has also popped up," but a remake or remaster is more likely the goal as of now. After getting Horiozn Hunters Gathering on the right track, a small team at Guerrilla will be assigned to steward People Can Fly's revival of Killzone.

Killzone Has Been On Ice for Over a Decade

Guerrilla's Killzone series was, at one point, a pillar property for PlayStation's exclusives slate. It was, essentially, the brand's big first-person shooter series, rivaling Xbox's Halo and Activision's Call of Duty. A trilogy of mainline games spanned the PS2 and PS3 generations, but the series' last outing was 2013's Killzone: Shadow Fall, a launch title for the PlayStation 4.

Four years later, Guerrilla Games would release the massively successful Horizon Zero Dawn, and has been preoccupied with that series since. Killzone hasn't received a new installment in the intervening 13 years. There is some minor precedent for a partner studio being brought on for a Killzone remaster; Supermassive Games was responsible for remastering the 2004 original when it was included in the Killzone Trilogy on the PS3.

Supermassive had, at that point, long been a second-party studio for PlayStation, working exclusively for the platform while not being owned by Sony. Project Delta is People Can Fly's first partnership with Sony, but Killzone, as the IP in question, tracks with the studio's history of developing shooters. Considering Guerrilla Games' current slate, however, it may be a long time before there is official confirmation of Killzone's reported comeback.
