New Star Trek Release Canceled Worldwide Ahead of November Launch

Wizards of the Coast's hotly anticipated Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek release just got smaller with an unexpected cancellation.

In a recent announcement via the official Daily MTG website, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that production of the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box has been canceled outright. Although the Beginner Box is the only Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek product being canceled, it still comes as a major blow to collectors, players, and retailers who have already purchased or sold pre-orders for the product.

Magic: The Gathering Says Goodbye to the Star Trek Beginner Box

The official statement from Wizards of the Coast reads, "Due to delays in production, logistics, and shipping, we will no longer be producing the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box. This product has been canceled in all regions. If you preordered a Beginner Box, contact your local game store or retailer for more information. For Magic events that planned to include the Beginner Box (like MagicCon: Atlanta), we are currently updating our plans and will share details in the future."

The Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box wasn't necessarily a key part of the wider Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set release, though it was absolutely marketed as a perfect jumping-on point for new players. The Beginner Box was meant to include two 20-card training decks consisting of Starfleet and Klingon cards, as well as eight further 20-card Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek half-decks that players would mix and match into larger 40-card decks as they pick up on the game.

Priced at $34.99 MSRP, the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Beginner Box was meant to provide an easy learning opportunity with only minor collectible appeal. As such, losing this particular product likely doesn't mean losing any exclusive versions of Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek cards, even if it is still a net negative for the player base and fans as a whole.

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek is set to arrive in stores on November 13, while pre-release events for the upcoming Universe's Beyond set will begin on November 6. Apart from Play and Collector Boosters of the main set, Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek will offer gamers and collectors four new Commander decks, both a standard Bundle and exclusive Beam Me Up Bundle Box, a new Draft Night kit, and two new Scene Boxes featuring the Divergent Timeline and Enterprise-Q.

Ahead of the full unveiling of Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek, Principal Designer Gavin Verhey opened up about the upcoming set, noting, "Star Trek is near and dear to my heart. I was the lead designer of Magic the Gathering | Star Trek, so that's very much the thing I'm putting a ton of work on."
