Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director Confirms Fortnite Partly Inspired

Final Fantasy VII Revelation allows players to seamlessly leap out of the Highwind airship to parachute down and explore the world below, something which was partly inspired by Fortnite, the game’s director has confirmed.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Naoki Hamaguchi admitted Epic Games’ battle royale title did inspire the team somewhat when it comes to skydiving off the Highwind, something which wasn’t seen in the original Final Fantasy VII. Instead, players would simply land the airship on the world map and exit it on explorable terrain; although, Cloud and his companions did parachute into Midgar from the Highwind on Disc 3.

We did get a bit of inspiration from Fortnite, [we] won’t lie about that,” said Hamaguchi-san.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will receive a physical release on a single Blu-ray disc, but will require players to download data in order to play the game. Hamaguchi-san recently explained to IGN that this is because developer Square Enix would have had to compromise the game’s quality otherwise, so this was the only way go move forward with a disc release.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is due out on April 8, 2027 for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. PSU went hands-on with FFVII Revelation at GamesCom last month, and you can read our impressions here.
